| Egyptian Bellydance is an emotive
dance, which visualises much of what it means to
be female, as it applies in today’s society, not just in the ancient
times when it was instigated. Through Arabic dance it is possible to demonstrate
the power, strength and beauty involved in being the so called ,’weaker
sex'.
Dancing helps health, fitness and physique, it has a toning, strengthening
and stretching effect on muscles often overlooked in other forms of exercise.
More important ( in my view ) than the physical impact of the dance, is
that it gives women of all ages, shapes and sizes the chance to feel good
about their bodies, whatever shape or size, and about themselves. The
therapeutic effects of music and dance have been well recorded and the
diverse range of Arabic music used in classes to dance to has many levels
in which to lose ( or indeed find! ) yourself.
In my experience Bellydance is good for;
- Toning all areas of body, especially bum, thighs,
stomach and upper arms
- Strengthening pelvic floor muscles (hence good for
shaping up again after giving birth!)
- Increasing cardio-vascular activity and therefore helping
to lower cholesterol and lose weight
- Relief from painful back, shoulders, neck, etc when
caused by postural problems
- Helping improve confidence and self esteem
- Making you feel good in your body, no matter what age,
shape, level you’re at.
- Improving posture
- Improving co-ordination
- Stress relief and relief of aliments affected by stress
e.g. IBS
- Building strength and control in muscles in a way which
helps support your joints
- Meeting women from all walks of life and making good
friends
- Exploring your sensuality in a safe environment
- Learning about different cultures and music- increasing
awareness of others
- An excuse to buy sparkly things
- Being silly and having fun!
